Class: Jack's relative Roles: Team Leader

Vee is the team leader, selected by the United Health of Nations. Vee is related to Jack Decayd, and the two share common DNA - the little threads of material that make us who we are.

Body Health Message

The fact that Vee and Jack Decayd share DNA introduces the concept of genetics into the story. Science shows that genetics plays a role in obesity. However genes do not always predict future health. Genes and behavior may both be needed for a person to be overweight. We can't change our genes, but we can change our behavior.

Class: Insulin hormone Roles: Energy Storage Officer

As the Body Mechanics' chief Energy Storage Officer, Soolynn's job is to make sure that the nutrients and energy are stored properly in Jack Decayd's body. Due to Jack's poor eating habits and lack of exercise, Soolynn has become overworked and vulnerable. She needs help - before it's too late for both her and Jack.

Body Health Message

Insulin is a hormone that regulates the chemical process in the body which results in energy production. Type 2 diabetes is a medical disorder characterized by varying or persistent elevated blood sugar levels. Health problems such as smoking, high cholesterol levels, obesity, high blood pressure, and lack of regular exercise can accelerate the damaging effects of type 2 diabetes.

Class: Glucagon hormone Roles: Energy Release Officer

Gluke is the Body Mechanics' chief Energy Release Officer. But, due to Jack's inactivity and lack of regular exercise, Gluke has been left under worked. Gluke is eager to see some action. But for that to happen, Jack's body has to get moving. And if the evil CHD get their way, Jack will never move again.

Body Health Message

As the body consumes glucose to meet energy demands, the blood glucose levels falls. Responding, the pancreas releases glucagon, a hormone which targets cells in the liver. These cells then convert glycogen into glucose. The glucose is released into the bloodstream, increasing blood sugar levels.

Sara Bellum

Class: Cerebellum structure Roles: Movement Coordinator

From her command station in Movement Control, Sara's job is to make sure that Jack - and everything inside him - is running smoothly. Now, Jack is incapacitated. If Sara and the other Body Mechanics can't get him moving again, everyone is doomed.

Body Health Message

The motor cortex sends information to the muscles causing them to move and the spinocerebellar tract provides feedback on the position of the body in space. The cerebellum or "little brain" integrates these two functions, using the constant feedback on body position to fine-tune motor movements.

Class: Brain Roles: Keeper of Knowledge

Neuro provides the knowledge the Body Mechanics need to keep Jack's body running. He has access to the security cameras inside Jack's body. He can see everything, and he knows everything. His Staff of Knowledge is the key to saving Jack's life.

Body Health Message

The brain controls and coordinates most movement, behavior and body functions such as heartbeat, blood pressure, fluid balance and body temperature. The brain is responsible for cognition, emotion, memory, motor learning and other kinds of learning. Exercise and a good diet boost the brain's performance.

Class: Oxidation inhibitors Roles: Cell defenders

The brave Antioxidant squadrons fly through Jack's body, protecting his cells from damage. Their job is to stop the evil Free Radz from gnawing Jack's cells to pieces. And they are willing to do their job - no matter what it may cost them.

Body Health Message

Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radical damage may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage free radicals otherwise might cause. Examples of antioxidants include beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamins C, E, and A. National Cancer Institute
